The genocide was triggered by the assassination of then-President Juvรฉnal Habyarimana, a Hutu, whose plane was shot down over Kigali. This event served as a pretext for the targeting of Tutsis in massacres orchestrated by Hutu extremists over a harrowing 100-day period.
