Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra announced on Wednesday that he had submitted his resignation, a little over two weeks after his defeat to junta leader Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno in the presidential elections.
“I have just submitted my resignation and that of the transition government, which has become irrelevant following the end of the presidential election,” Masra said on his Facebook page, in a message authenticated by his team to AFP.
He added that the decision was in accordance with the constitution.
Deby, 40, was declared transitional president in April 2021 by a junta of 15 generals after his father, long-time president Idriss Deby Itno, was killed by rebels after 30 years in power.
Deby won the May 6 presidential election with 61 percent of the vote, according to final results.
Masra, also 40 and a former fierce opponent of Deby before becoming prime minister four months ago, secured 18.5 percent of the vote but contested the outcome.
Masra claimed victory in the election, which his party labeled a “masquerade” and which international rights groups had declared would neither be credible nor fair.
