Ato Koomson, the son of Awutu Senya East’s Member of Parliament and Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, reportedly suffered a stabbing during a tumultuous altercation near the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa.
According to sources, Ato Koomson sustained severe injuries and was urgently transported to the 37 Military Hospital for medical attention. Another individual was also harmed during the altercation.
Law enforcement authorities have apprehended two individuals in connection with the stabbing incident involving Hawa Koomson’s son in Kasoa.
Eyewitness testimonies suggest that the confrontation erupted early in the morning when supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed over residents’ positions in the queue for the ongoing voter ID card transfer and replacement exercise.
The discord reportedly began at around 4:00 am due to a dispute regarding reserved spots in the queue.
Mr. Koomson arrived at the registration center about 45 minutes after the altercation commenced. He purportedly sought assistance from an NDC organizer to resolve the matter, but tensions escalated when another NDC supporter verbally assaulted him.
King Adawu, an NPP member also injured in the incident, recounted that the altercation turned violent when an NDC member allegedly brandished a knife and stabbed Ato Koomson in the chest.
Adawu, who attempted to intervene, sustained a minor injury to his hand.
Both Koomson and Adawu were swiftly transported to the hospital, where Adawu received treatment and was subsequently discharged, while Koomson remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Authorities have arrested the primary suspect, and inquiries into the incident are underway.
This violent episode has prompted concerns regarding political tensions and violence surrounding the voter registration process in the region.
