President Bola Tinubu condemned the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump as “unacceptable and far outside the boundaries of democratic norms”.
Gunshots rang out at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday while he was criticizing his successor as “the worst president in the history of our country”.
As the shots were fired, Trump took cover behind the podium before being shielded by his security team. He was later escorted away from the stage, though not before defiantly raising his fist in the air.
Videos circulating on social media showed Trump with blood on his ear during the incident.
Reacting to the incident in a post published via X on Sunday, Tinubu sympathised with the former US president, adding that violence has no place in democracy.
“The attack on former President Donald Trump is distasteful and goes beyond the pale of democratic norms. Violence has no place in democracy,” Tinubu wrote.
“I extend my sympathies to the former president and wish him relief.
“I also condole with the family of the deceased and those wounded and wish them a quick recovery.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States of America at this time.”
