The Ministry of Transport has proposed a Legislative Instrument (L.I) to amend sections of the Road Traffic Regulations 2012, aiming to extend certain privileges to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers of State.
If approved, the changes will allow MPs and Ministers to equip their vehicles with sirens or bells for use as warning devices, a privilege previously restricted to emergency and specialized vehicles.
This amendment affects Regulation 74 of LI 2180, applying also to vehicles owned by Supreme Court justices.
Furthermore, the proposed amendment to Regulation 166 of LI 2180 exempts MPs and Ministers from speed limit regulations, enabling them to navigate traffic congestion more swiftly.
In a separate development, Parliament passed the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2020 in December 2020, introducing harsher penalties for traffic offenses resulting in the death of an unborn child, marking the first successful passage of a private member’s Bill proposed by MPs.
