Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye of Senegal strongly criticized the UN Security Council for its inaction in addressing the deaths and destabilization plaguing the Sahel region. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday (Sept. 25), Faye condemned foreign powers for turning the Sahel into a battleground for their rivalries, which only worsens the region’s instability.
“We cannot allow the Sahel to become a stage for foreign conflicts, further destabilizing the region,” Faye remarked. He emphasized that peace and security in Africa are inseparable from global stability, urging the Security Council to uphold its responsibility as the guarantor of international peace.
Faye also pointed to recent tensions, referencing comments from Ukrainian officials regarding separatist rebel attacks in Mali, which were denounced by Malian authorities.
In his address, Faye called for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to unjust economic practices such as illegal trade and tax evasion, which hinder the progress of Global South nations. He also advocated for proper representation of Africa in international institutions.
On climate change, Faye urged developed nations with “historic” responsibility to increase efforts in financing a “just and equitable” transition. He stressed the need to protect the planet while allowing vulnerable nations to continue their path to development.
Faye also criticized the imposition of unilateral cultural norms, warning that such actions threaten global peace and stability.
