Fresh clashes erupted in Sudan’s capital in late September as the military launched a new offensive to reclaim parts of Khartoum held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Footage from the aftermath captured Sudanese soldiers driving through the damaged streets of Bahri city, north of Khartoum, as they pressed forward. The Halfaya Bridge, previously controlled by the RSF, has now been reopened.

Reports indicate that the army, along with its allies, is attempting to seize control of the Khartoum oil refinery in al-Jaili, located about 70 km north of the capital. Other key battlegrounds include Jebel Moya in southeastern Sudan and El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.

As the rainy season ends, fighting is expected to escalate. Last week, the head of Sudan’s military urged militias to lay down their arms in an address to the UN General Assembly.

Sudan has been embroiled in a violent conflict since mid-April of last year. According to the U.N. human rights office in Geneva, at least 78 civilians have been killed in the Khartoum area since the start of September.
